Grading & Reporting
How grades are calculated at Westside Baptist Academy, and when reports go home.
Westside Baptist Academy sets out its grading policy openly, so parents know what the numbers on a report card mean, how the year adds up, and when to expect each report.
Grading scale

Grades are determined through standardized tests, teacher-made tests, daily class work, homework, and teacher observation.
Marked subjects
Art, PE, Choir, Orchestra, Junior High Ensemble and Senior High Ensemble are marked rather than graded:
- E — Excellent
- S — Satisfactory
- NI — Needs Improvement
- U — Unsatisfactory
Rounding
Grades are rounded to whole numbers: .1 through .4 round down, .5 through .9 round up. Semester and final averages are calculated from the rounded quarter grades exactly as they appear on the report card, so the arithmetic on the page always adds up.
Semester and final grades
- Semester grade = the average of that semester's two nine-week grades
- Final year grade = the average of the two semester grades
Semester grades print on the 2nd and 4th nine-week report cards. Report cards show all four quarters plus semester grades, in numeric form only.
A student who enrolls mid-year is graded only for the periods they were actually here.
Reports
All students receive weekly folders showing their progress.
Progress reports go home four and a half weeks into each nine-week grading period, listing the grade earned and an explanation of areas needing improvement.
Report cards are issued every nine weeks and carry quarter grades, semester grades where applicable, absences, and total class tardies.
Progress reports and report cards must be signed by parents and returned to the teacher the next day.
Nine-week conferences
After the first nine-week period, time is set aside for parents to meet with teachers and pick up their child's report card. This meeting is required for all parents.
Conferences at other times are scheduled through the office, in advance, and held at the school during the week. Teachers are not able to discuss concerns while classes are in session, while on parking lot duty, or at church service times.
Honor roll
- A Honor Roll — all A's
- B Honor Roll — all A's and B's
A student on the A Honor Roll does not also appear on the B Honor Roll.
Promotion
Students are required to pass Bible to return to the Academy.
Failure of two or more subjects results in automatic failure of the grade unless sufficient progress is made in summer school. A student must make satisfactory progress, as determined by the teacher and the administrator, in order to be promoted.
Attendance affects promotion as well: a student missing more than twenty-one days in a year is not eligible, and high school students may not be given credit for a course if they miss more than twelve days in that semester.
